Baytril® (Enrofloxacin)


Product Description: This antibiotic, containing enrofloxacin, is effective against Staphylococcus spp., Clostridium perfringens, Bacteroides spp., E. coli, Brucella canis, Klebsiella spp., Proteus mirabilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterial infections. This is one of the strongest antibiotics that can be used in animals; therefore, it should be reserved for severe infections that are not responsive to other antibiotics.

Indications for Use: Baytril is for use in bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, bladder, skin, and tissues, including wounds and abscesses.

Dosage and Administration: Baytril comes as an injectable liquid and as a tablet. The injectable form is often used at a dose of 1 mL per 20 lbs. of body weight. This injection is given only once and should be given in the muscle (IM). After this initial injection, the tablets should be administered at a rate of one 22.7 mg tablet per 20 lbs. of body weight, twice a day. The tablets should be started 12 hours after the initial injection. This antibiotic can be given for up to 30 days total.

Precautions and Side Effects: Because of potential bone defects, this product should not be given to young animals that are experiencing rapid growth (between 2-8 months of age). Allergic reactions are a possibility. See page E200 for additional information on allergic reactions. Avoid contact with skin and eyes; if accidental exposure occurs, flush the area thoroughly with water.

Packaging: This product comes as a liquid in a 20 ml liquid bottle or in a tablet form. The liquid contains 22.7 mg per mL, and the tablets come in 22.7, 68, and 136 mg strengths.

Storage: Both products should be stored at a controlled room temperature, kept from freezing, and out of direct sunlight.
