Clean
the underside of the tail thoroughly with alcohol.
The
arrow indicates a "valley" where the tail vein can
be found. The finger indicates a bony projection that should
be avoided.
Once
a "valley" has been identified, the needle can be
inserted. Often the needle will contact bone. If this occurs,
pull back slightly since the vein lies just superficial to the
bone.
Once
the vein has been identified, blood can be drawn or a low
volume (5 mL) injection can be given. Any blood sample should
be immediately tested or placed in the appropriate blood
tubes.
