Dosage and Administration: Give 1-2 mL per 100 lbs., given once a day IM, SQ or IV (IV route is better for a very sick animal). The 4 gram bottle of powder must be mixed with 80 mL of sterile water only.
Duration of Treatment: Administer Naxcel at least three days consecutively. Treat at least two days beyond resolution of the infection. If there is no response after the third or fourth day of treatment, consider a different antibiotic. At this point, culture and sensitivity might be an option.
Packaging: This product comes in 1 gram and 4 gram bottles of sterile powder.
Precautions and Side Effects: Allergic reactions are a possibility.
Storage and Shelf Life: The powdered form does not need to be refrigerated until it is reconstituted. After reconstitution, the unused portion must be refrigerated and administered within 7 days. A second method of storage is freezing. After reconstitution, the remaining portion can be stored frozen for up to two months. The best way to store the frozen Naxcel is in a syringe. When Naxcel is needed, the appropriate size of syringe containing the antibiotic can be removed from the freezer, slowly thawed in hot water, and administered.
