Taking a Temperature

A lubricated thermometer can be placed in the rectum. The thermometer should be left in place for 2-3 minutes.

A normal rectal temperature for an adult cow is 99-103° F. A calf’s normal temperature is 101-103° F.

With practice, a cow with a fever can be identified during a rectal palpation. This method can be utilized while artificially inseminating, etc.
