Taking a Temperature


 

After placing lubrication on the thermometer, stand as close to the horse as possible. Three points of contact is best. Lifting the horse’s tail will help determine how cooperative the animal will be.

 

 

Gently insert the lubricated thermometer
1-2 inches into the rectum. Leave the thermometer in place for 2-3 minutes. Refer to page A560 for normal temperature ranges.
Placing a long piece of tape or string on the end of the thermometer helps to keep track of the thermometer. A video of this procedure can be found below.
