® (Ceftiofur)

Product Description: This is an antibiotic effective against gram negative and gram positive bacteria (Pasteurella, Haemophilus, some E-coli and Salmonella).

Indications for Use: Naxcel can be used for general bacterial infections including pneumonia and diarrhea.

Dosage and Administration: Give 2 mL per 100 lbs. of body weight, IM, SQ or IV, once or twice a day. No more than a maximum of 10 mL per injection site should be given. The bottles of powder must be mixed using only sterile water.

Duration of Treatment: Administer Naxcel at least three days consecutively. Treat at least two days beyond resolution of the infection. If no response is noted after the third or fourth day of treatment, consider a different antibiotic.  At this point, culture and sensitivity might be an option. Treatment should not exceed 10 days.

Packaging: It comes in 1 gram and 4 gram bottles of sterile powder.

Precautions and Side Effects: Allergic reactions are a possibility.

Storage and Shelf Life: The powdered form does not need to be refrigerated until it is reconstituted. After reconstitution, the unused portion must be refrigerated and administered within 7 days. A second method of storage is freezing. After reconstitution, the remaining portion can be stored frozen for up to two months. The best way to store the frozen Naxcel is in a syringe. When Naxcel is needed, the appropriate size of syringe containing the antibiotic can be removed from the freezer, slowly thawed in hot water, and administered.
