Xylazine (Rompun)

Product Description: Xylazine is a sedative for use in horses. It is also an analgesic that helps prevent pain.

Indications for Use: This product can be administered as a pre-medication prior to surgery or can be used during minor procedures (teeth floating, suturing injuries). It can also be used to sedate an animal prior to traveling.

Dosage and Administration: Intravenous administration is recommended at a dose of 0.1-0.5 mL per 100 pounds of body weight. The lower dose of 1-1.5 mLs of xylazine (intravenously) can often be used for minor procedures such as floating teeth and cleaning abrasions. The higher doses can be used for preanesthetic prior to surgery. When giving xylazine intramuscularly, the higher end of the dose is often given. This product can result in marked sedation and can cause the animal to stumble and be incoordinated. Xylazine can have some very severe side effects in some animals. Because of this, the dose for each animal can be very different and should be modified to fit each animal and the desired depth of sedation.

Precautions and Side Effects: Seizure and collapse can occur if this product is administered in the carotid artery. Because of this, extreme caution should be used when administering this product intravenously (IV). Always ensure that the injection is being given in the jugular vein. For additional help on giving IV injections, refer to page B362.

Packaging: Most large animal injectable products come in a 100 mg/mL concentration.

Storage: Keep at a controlled room temperature.
