Balling Gun and Pill Forceps

Place the pill in the balling gun.

 

The thumb (fingers) of one hand should be placed into the mouth in the region between the front teeth and the molars. This will force the animal to open its mouth. The balling gun should then be placed into the corner of the mouth and over the back of the tongue.

 

The balling gun should be pushed in until it is completely over the back of the tongue. The head should be raised slightly and the pill slowly administered.

When using a balling gun, care should be taken to avoid lacerating the tongue, cheek pouches, and back of the mouth. When using balling guns, do not use excessive force or use guns that are damaged and have sharp edges.



Pill Forceps

The pill should be placed in the pill forceps. The thumb (fingers) of one hand should be placed into the mouth in the region between the front teeth and the molars. This will force the animal to open its mouth.

 

The pill forceps should then be placed into the corner of the mouth and over the back of the tongue.

 

The forceps should be pushed in until it is completely over the back of the tongue. The head should be raised slightly and the pill released.
