Drawing Blood


 

1. Clean the jugular region of the neck with alcohol or chlorhexidine. This will sanitize the area and make the vein easier to see. 2. The thumb of one hand should be placed over the lower part of the vein to help it fill with blood and distend.

 

 

3. A 1.5 inch, 18-20 gauge needle should be directed into the vein. Once in place, the plunger on the syringe can be pulled to fill the syringe with blood. 4. After the blood is collected, it should be placed in the appropriate blood tube and transported immediately to a veterinarian or laboratory. A video of this procedure is found below.
