Urine Testing

Introduction: There are many different urine "dip stick" tests that can detect abnormalities in the following parameters: leukocytes, nitrates, pH, protein, glucose, ketones, urobilinogen, bilirubin, blood, and urine specific gravity. The Multistix test is commonly used to test for all of these at once. The Ketostix urine test is used when testing only for ketone levels. This is commonly done when looking for evidence of ketosis. See page F650 for additional information on ketosis.

Procedure: A clean, fresh urine sample should be collected from the animal and tested as soon as possible (see page C125 for help with collecting a urine sample). Immerse the strip in the urine and remove immediately. Depending on the test, the results should be read anywhere from 15 seconds to 2 minutes after the strip is removed from the urine. Refer to the container for specifics and then to determine the results of the test.

Multistix Handling and Storage: Store the strips at room temperature and out of direct sunlight. Keep unused reagent strips in the original bottle with the cap tightly closed. Do not use strips if they are past the expiration date.

Ketostix Handling and Storage: Store the strips at room temperature and out of direct sunlight. Keep unused reagent strips in the original bottle with the cap tightly closed. A new bottle of strips can be used for 6 months after being opened. Do not use strips if they are past the expiration date.
