Ovine Ecthyma Vaccine

Product Description: This is a live virus vaccine for the prevention of contagious ecthyma (orf or soremouth) in sheep and goats.

Dosage and Administration: This product comes as a powder that must be reconstituted prior to use with the liquid provided. An area with no hair or wool should be scarified or scratched with the notched handle of the furnished applicator. A good area to scarify is the skin in the inside thigh region. The scarifying does not need to cause bleeding, but should be deep enough to roughen the skin. After a 1-inch square area is scarified, the vaccine should be "brushed" onto the area. Slight swelling and reddening of the area should be noticed a few days later. These areas should scab over and the scab should fall off in about 3 weeks. All of these are signs of a successful vaccination.

In problem flocks/herds, the lambs/kids may need to be vaccinated at 6-8 weeks to help prevent the disease. In flocks/herds with severe problems, the vaccine may need to be given when the lamb/kid is just 2-3 days old. Protection from vaccination may last from 2 years to life depending on the vaccine and the animal’s immune response. Most producers choose to vaccinate the entire flock/herd at one time, and then only vaccinate newborns and new additions to the flock/herd, thereafter.

Packaging: This product comes in 100 dose bottles. Shake well prior to use.

Precautions and Side Effects: Allergic reactions are also a possibility. The vaccine can cause the disease in humans, so it is important to use caution when handling it. People handling infected animals or the vaccine should wear rubber or plastic gloves to prevent the virus from entering through small cuts or abrasions. Do not use this vaccine within 24 hours of dipping or spraying for parasites.

Storage and Shelf Life: This vaccine must be refrigerated prior to use.
