Acepromazine
(Injection and Tablet)

Product Description: Acepromazine is a tranquilizer and a pre-anesthetic for use in dogs.

Indications for Use: This product can be administered as a pre-medication prior to surgery or be used during minor procedures (X-rays, grooming, detailed examinations, etc.). This product can also be used to calm a nervous or aggressive animal.

Dosage and Administration: Acepromazine can have some very severe side effects in some animals. Because of this, the dose for each animal can be very different. The following are some general guidelines that can be used, but should be modified to fit each animal and the desired depth of tranquilization. The injectable products can be given IV, IM, or SQ at a dose of 0.03-0.11 mg/lb of body weight. If this injection is given IV, it should be given slowly. Sufficient time should be allowed for the drug to take effect (at least 15 min.). A total IV dose of no more than 3 mg per dog should ever be given. The tablets can be given orally at 0.25-1.0 mg/lb of body weight.

Precautions and Side Effects: Acepromazine can cause severe hypotension (low blood pressure) in some animals. It seems that retrievers are particularly sensitive to this drug. Caution should be used when administering this product to the very young, old, or to dogs with heart and lung (cardiovascular or respiratory) problems.

Packaging: The tablets come in 5, 10, and 25 mg strengths. The injectable products come in a 10 mg/mL concentration.

Storage: Keep both products at a controlled room temperature, with the liquid out of direct sunlight.
